Christmas will be here Friday, and you might get some technology as a gift this year.
I wanted to help you get the most out of it while also staying protected.
For the good boys and girls who got a new computer for Christmas, you need to make sure it and your data stay safe.
Whether it is a laptop or desktop, be sure your antivirus is on at all times. Depending on the computer, it probably came equipped with it. Open the antivirus software on the computer to look at the expiration date. Computer often come with a trial antivirus software that lasts a few months to a year. Figure out when yours expires and be ready to take action before that happens.
If you end up liking the antivirus that came on your computer, by all means keep it, but make sure you pay for new virus definitions. If you don’t like it, or don’t want to pay for it, there are free options available that will help keep your computer protected.
In case you didn’t know, Microsoft’s latest operating systems come with Windows Defender. Open it and make sure it is updated. If you plan to stick with it, make sure to remove your old antivirus software, because having multiple types installed can cause problems.
There are other free antivirus products. AVG Free is still around and still pretty good. Download it at avg.com. Be careful when selecting a download, because they also have paid products.
If you were lucky enough to get a new tablet or smartphone, you must protect them, too.
Although viruses and spyware aren’t a big concern here, it doesn’t mean they’re impossible to get. Don’t download or install any apps you don’t trust. This is especially the case for Android devices, or if you install apps without going through the Google Play store.
On Apple devices, this is less of an issue, because Apple does strict testing on apps applying to the App store. Nothing is perfect, though, so be careful.
It is also a good idea to get covers and screen protectors for your tablets and smart phones.
These types of devices are easy to damage and expensive to fix.
It makes sense to spend a little bit of money up front to help protect your devices in case they’re dropped. I won’t use a new phone or tablet until it is in a case. You don’t need to spend a lot of money.
You’re likely to overpay at a cell phone shop. I have found Amazon.com normally has the same cases for a fraction of the price. I rarely ever spend more than $15 for a nice case for my phone, and it works well. If you shop around, you likely can find them even cheaper, depending on the style.
Once all of your new tech gear is safe, you can start to enjoy it.
